EDIT: By Originals, I mean non-sequels
It seems Fall 2016 is heavily tilted to sequels. Not complaining, I love me some Ajin, but I do like watching random new shows with odd premises- you never know when you’ll find a jewel in the rough. This is a list of those potential candidates.
This is purely a list based off what I’ve seen that’s coming out, that aligns with my own tastes. It’s not extensive, and its by no means the best of what’s coming out. If you like female-centered anime, the occasional heartwarmer, or just occasional throwaway ecchi trash, then this is the list for you.
In no particular order:
Kaminashi Nozomi (17) is an exceptional gymnast. So much so that colleges with some of the best gymnastic programs are trying to recruit her. Unfortunately for them, she has other plans. Due to her family being extremely poor, money is everything to her. That’s why she wants to step into the world of “Keijo.” “Keijo” is a type of gambling sport where girls stand on a small floating platform and compete against one another. The aim is to push the other contestant off of the platform into the water, but they are only allowed to use their butt or breasts to push the others off. Will Nozomi be able to compete in the intense world of “Keijo” and bring wealth and fortune for her family? (Source: MangaHelpers)
Now based on this trailer alone, I imagine this is going to be hilarious. Swim club meets Wipeout with boob-jousting. Expect plenty of fan service.
A super exciting action comedy starring the inmates and guards of the world’s most formidable prison. (Source: Crunchyroll)
This one looks like my son ate a box of crayons and vomited over a boxset of Orange is the new Black. Not sure about this one, could go either way, but I’ll watch the first episode to see if it has legs. Looks like it might just be a neon-pop scene comedy with two stories every episode.
Souta Tawara is a web designer working in Tokyo. When he visits his family’s Udon place in his hometown Kagawa Prefecture, he discovers a young boy. Upon confronting the boy, Souta soon learns his secret and decides to quit his job in order to take care of the boy, Poko. The daily adventures of the two slowly enfold as Poco energetically navigates his way through Kagawa, the “Udon Kingdom,” along with Souta.
As a dad, I can’t not watch this. It looks like it’s going to be equal parts hilarious and heartwarming.
The series follows Chitose Karasuma, a university student who aims to become a voice actress (seiyuu). The stage event listing further indicates that it focuses on the profession of idol seiyuu. (Source: MALnews)
Slice of life, comedy, idols, sarcastic male counterpart. ‘nuff siad.
Tamaki Honda, a new high school student joins a doujin game development circle.
I loved New Game!, and this looks like it could be that shows little sister.
Ami Kurata, a first-year university student who has no athletic ability, suddenly falls in love with a folding bicycle after seeing it in front of a train station. Inspired by her newfound love, she starts saving up to buy a bicycle and to learn cycling. (Source: MALnews)
The animation looks solid, and it could have potential. I’m not one for ‘sports’ animes as such, but the trailer held my interest and I think it will hold my attention for a season.
I’ll take a mid-article break to say how refreshing it is to see a lot of anime coming out where its an all female cast. Usually it’s all the girls pining after one lucky dude, who is totally oblivious, but these all-female ones allow you to connect to the character a lot more. Take New Game! for example, you throw a dude in there and have everyone in the office have a crush on him, totally different show and not nearly as interesting.
The manga follows middle school students Koyori Tsumujikaze and Agari Kamiya as they enter the world of girls’ middle school ping pong. (Source: ANN)
Much like Long Riders! above, this looks like it will hold my interest. High school comedy, cute girls. Extreme kawaii.
Tokine Amino works as a secretary for TEN2, an advertising agency. One day while cleaning the conference room, she is surrounded in light and finds she can’t leave the room until she solves a puzzle. It seems a creature named Hacchin is a being from another dimension called Quizn. He is interested in the intellectual pleasure that happens when someone solves a puzzles or uncovers a mystery. And he has his sight set on Tokine Amino.
I like puzzles, mysteries, and the odd sci-fi. Looks like it could be a lot of fun.
Have I missed anything out that is in the same sort of genre as these - or even a sequel to a series that’s already aired? Let me know your thoughts.
